Sometimes the leather already has a story before it ever reaches my workbench.
This one-of-a-kind leather eyeglass case was made from a section of vegetable-tanned cowhide that still carries part of an original cattle brand from the hide itself.
Rather than covering that history with carving or decorative stamping, I positioned the branded section prominently on the front of the case, allowing three large brand characters and the warm natural character of the leather to become the design.
The brand was not stamped, carved or burned into the case by me—it was already part of the hide. I lightly finished the leather to bring out those original markings and its warm color, then constructed the case with contrasting dark stitching and hand-finished edges. My Cherokee Rose Custom Leather maker's mark is stamped on the back.
The original ranch associated with the brand is unknown, but that's part of what makes this particular piece interesting: the leather arrived at my bench carrying a piece of history all its own.
No two branded hides are exactly alike, making this a truly one-of-a-kind piece.
