Hand Cut Crosshatch Leather Roper Wallet – Bordeaux

Traditional leatherwork doesn't always require dozens of different stamping tools.

Sometimes a swivel knife, a ruler and a whole lot of careful measuring can do the talking.

This handmade leather Roper wallet features an original large-scale crosshatch design cut entirely by hand into vegetable-tanned leather. Each intersecting line was laid out and individually cut with a swivel knife to create the repeating diamond pattern across the exterior.

Small hand-stamped accents were then added at every intersection, creating the dark starburst details that give the pattern its depth and character. A subtly textured border finishes the design without competing with the geometric pattern.

The result is a clean Western design that changes depending on how the light hits it—you can really see the depth of those individual swivel-knife cuts in the leather.

Rich Bordeaux Finish

The exterior is hand dyed with Eco Flo Waterstain in Bordeaux, giving the leather a deep reddish-brown/burgundy color rather than a traditional medium brown.

Antiquing settles into the individual cuts and stamped details, creating the dark contrast throughout the crosshatch pattern and emphasizing every intersection.

Black machine stitching, dark finished edges and the black leather interior pull the entire color combination together.

And because this is genuine vegetable-tanned leather rather than a printed or coated material, you'll still see the natural grain and subtle variations of the hide beneath the finish.

Open the wallet and you'll find an interior made from genuine textured black pigskin leather.

Pigskin gives this traditional long-wallet design a durable leather interior without adding the bulk that would come from constructing every interior pocket from heavier vegetable-tanned leather.

What Does “Hand Cut” Mean?

This design wasn't pressed into the leather with an embossing plate or created from pre-patterned leather.

The exterior began as a plain piece of vegetable-tanned cowhide.

The diamond pattern was laid out across the leather and every line was individually cut using a leatherworker's swivel knife. The small decorative impressions at the intersections were then added by hand before the leather was dyed, antiqued, finished, assembled and stitched.

That means the pattern isn't merely sitting on the surface—the design was physically worked into the leather by hand.

Made From Real Leather

Natural grain variations, scars, wrinkles and subtle differences in color are normal characteristics of genuine leather and may remain visible in the finished piece.

Those variations are part of what makes handmade leather different from mass-produced synthetic or heavily corrected materials.

With use, the vegetable-tanned exterior will continue to soften and develop additional character and patina unique to the person carrying it.
