Hand Carved Sunflower Leather Eyeglass Case

This sunflower was an experiment—and definitely a labor of love.

This one-of-a-kind leather eyeglass case features a large hand-carved sunflower, individually colored using a hand-dyeing technique that gives the petals their rich golden-yellow color and natural variation.

Rather than simply painting the flower with acrylics, I experimented with applying and building leather dye through the petals and surrounding design. The result is a sunflower with layers of yellow, golden and darker tones that allow the carved lines and individual petals to remain visible instead of creating a flat field of color.

The sunflower is surrounded by a warm, mottled brown leather finish with textured tooling around the flower. A decorative hand-stamped scroll border follows the edge of the case and continues onto the back, where the simpler design allows the natural character and variation of the leather to show.

The case is constructed from genuine vegetable-tanned cowhide and machine stitched with brown thread, with dark hand-finished edges completing the piece. My Cherokee Rose Custom Leather maker's mark is stamped on the back.
