This one-of-a-kind leather eyeglass case combines traditional carving and basket stamping in one richly detailed design.

Handcrafted from genuine vegetable-tanned leather, the case features deeply carved oak leaves and acorns flowing across the front. The remaining leather is completely filled with a hand-stamped woven basketweave pattern, creating a beautiful contrast between the flowing organic carving and the structured woven texture.

Creating the rich variation in the oak leaves required a multi-step oiling process. The leather received three separate applications of oil, with each application given time to absorb and develop before the next was applied. The result is the warm variation and depth visible throughout the leaves.

The outer border is hand dyed medium brown, while the textured background surrounding the carved oak leaves and acorns is finished in Spanish brown, adding even more contrast and helping the carving stand forward from the background.

Every carved line, individual basketweave impression and finishing detail was done by hand in my East Texas leather studio.

The combination of carved leather and basket stamping means there is very little untouched surface on this piece. From the individual veins and detail cuts in the oak leaves to every impression forming the woven background, the design was created one tool impression at a time.

It's a functional eyeglass case, but it's also a pretty damn good example of why handmade leatherwork looks nothing like something rolled through an embossing machine.
